Abstract

Daily physical activity performed by overweight children is lower than daily physical activity performed by normal weight children. The aim of this research was to know if this difference was also maintained in environments, as school recesses, where all children have equal opportunities to be physically active. A total of 263 students (140 boys, 123 girls; 39.9% overweight) from six to eight years old participated in this study. Pedometers assessed physical activity during recesses. No significant differences were found between physical activity in recess for normal weight and overweight children (p = 0.586). Promoting environments, such as recesses, could help reduce the difference in levels of daily physical activity among overweight and normal weight children.
